The first printed book in English was in 1473 and was a translation by Caxton known as Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye "A Collection of the Histories of Troy“ It was a translation of a French Courtly Romance by Raoul Lefèvre written in 1464

In 1774 Chlorine was discovered and found to bleach paper to give the nice white paper we are used to.

The first book-sleeve was on an expensive annual called the Keepsake in 1829. This was designed for young ladies as Christmas presents and contained articles and poems by, among others, Walter Scott, Wordsworth, Coleridge. The book was bound in silk and had coloured illustrations. It was an enormous commercial success and appeared for the next 30 years.
