Gutenberg was a political exile who set up his workshop in Strasbourg in 1440. His fame came from printing the Bible in Latin in 1445. He printed 180 copies and it was thought to have taken him five years. There are still 60 of these in existence each worth about £25 million - only 21 are complete. . The importance of his printing press was that it allowed the spread of knowledge.
