| To counterbalance the Machiavelli, Charlecote also
has a copy of Erasmus’ The Education of a Christian Prince. He argues
that the teacher should have a gentle disposition and unimpeachable morals
– quite the opposite of Machiavelli. This particular copy was presented
by Erasmus to Henry VIII and bears Henry’s book plate. Now this is a proper book so how did we get here? |
