Charlecote Park Frank’s Forage No. 43
Davenport and Hammond
I quote from the new guide book, page 7: “On his death, (Captain Thomas) as he was childless, the house passed to the descendants of Thomas III’s youngest son. Davenport Lucy was killed at the siege of Limerick in 1690, so it was his brother Colonel George Lucy who brought to an end a confusing period in the ownership of the estate”. One could take issue with the bold italics.
Captain Thomas was not childless but had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Clement Throckmorton.
The estate passed to Thomas III’s son Fulke, who was the sixth and probably the youngest as I believe there were other sons.
Colonel George’s brother William succeeded him to the estate. No confusion there! For me the confusion came not with the death of William in 1723 but with the various John Hammonds. Let us go back to Fulke Lucy.
Fulke Lucy married Isabel Davenport, daughter of William Davenport of Henbury, Cheshire and Mary Milward. William and Mary married in July 1635 and had one daughter, Isabel. Both parents died young when Isabel was little more than a toddler. Isabel was sole heiress to the Henbury estate which passed into the Lucy family on her marriage to Fulke. Fulke and Isabel had 14 children, several dying in childhood. Fulke became an MP for Co. Chester in1664 and was knighted. The Henbury estate was sold by Colonel George in1693.
Alice was the second daughter of Fulke and Isabel, born in 1660 and baptised at Prestbury. (Henbury and Prestbury are a few miles apart to the west of Macclesfield). On 16th April 1689, Alice married Rev. John Hammond, Rector of Gawsworth at Prestbury. Gawsworth is also in the same area. The Hammonds had been well-established in the area for centuries. As far as is known, John and Alice had two children, John and Susannah. Alice died in October 1697 soon after the birth of Susannah. In June 1701, John married Rebeckah Bayly.
John’s son, John also took holy orders, becoming rector of Tolland near Taunton, Somerset. (William Lucy was also rector of that parish before taking the livings of Hampton Lucy and Charlecote. A family affair?). From the Tolland registers, John married Sarah Morley from nearby North Petherton in November 1717. I don’t know how many children John and Sarah had only that they had a son, also John born in 1734, 17 years after their marriage!
This third John also entered the church becoming rector of Hampton Lucy and vicar of Charlecote. Previously a Rev. George Hammond was rector of Hampton Lucy, obviously related to the Hammonds of Gawsworth. On the death of Bachelor George in 1786 and according to his will, John succeeded to Charlecote and in 1788 took the name Lucy added to Hammond. A year later he married Maria Lane, second daughter of John Lane of Bentley Hall, Staffordshire, 24 years his junior. They had two sons, John, also a parson and George, who inherited Charlecote in 1823 and married Mary Elizabeth Williams. At this time the name Hammond was dropped, the surname reverting back to just Lucy.
