Going into Battle

Much of Olaus Magnus' book is taken up with War, Battles and skirmishes between the Northern States - the Swedes, Norwegians, Finns and Danes.

The woodcuts above illustrate the Danish king Ragnar attacking the Biarmians, inhabitants of the Northern mountains and plains. The Birmians called upon the Finns to provide bowmen who used sliding boards on their feet and Ragnar was defeated. Like a lot of material in the Olaus Magnus book this is oral mythology and I have not found any evidence of the existance of a King Ragnar. Magnus' source was the history of Saxo Grammaticus from the 12th Century.
