King Gustav Wasa was the king of Sweden from 1523 until his death in 1560. Initially Olaus got on well with him until he introduced the Lutheran faith. Olaus Magnus was a Catholic and had to flee from Sweden. After some years of travelling around he settled permanently in Italy 1539. There he started a new career as a historic researcher, cartographer and writer producing this magnus opus in 1555.
