This is his famous World Map available as a poster from Athene. Interestingly
it says Terra Australis nondum cognita which translates as The Land
Australia not yet known.
Australia was given the Name New Holland in 1644 by Abel Tasman and
it stuck for 180 years. You see it on our globe in the library. In 1804
Matthew Flinders gave it the name Australia and it was finally approved
in 1824. The name Australia came from Ptolemy. He speculated there would
be a large land mass in the south to balance that in the North and he
named it Terra Australis Incognita the Unknown South Land and
that is what Ortelius has adopted.
