The December 1940 Blitz hit Paternoster Row, the centre of the London publishing and book trade. 20 publishing houses were partially or totally destroyed. An estimated 5 million books were destroyed. 16,000,000 were destroyed by the Nazis in Poland. The National Library of Poland’s manuscript collection was destroyed to erase Polish National History. Equally Allied bomber attacks caused extensive destruction of German libraries – Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Darmstadt, Dortmund, Dresden – the list goes on. We destroyed over 900 million books. In 1953 Senator McCarthy drew up a list of pro-communist authors and libraries were ordered to remove them from their shelves. Many were burned or pulped. In 1992 Serbian Nationalists firebombed The National library of Bosnia in Sarajevo destroying 1.5 million books including 4000 rare books and 700 manuscripts
