This is an Athenian head of the goddess Aphrodite. She still manages to look beautiful and sensual in spite of the vandalism. But notice the cross on her forehead. These vandals were Third Century Christians. The Romans had tolerated all sorts of religions in their various temples, even the Christian religion . But the Christians were not tolerant and tried to destroy Rome and wider still.
